The museum specialises in the presentation of the history of the Croatian ethnic minority in Slovakia and acts as an umbrella for systematic ethnographical research of the history and culture of this ethnic minority.

In the 16th century Croatians escaping from the Turkish threat colonised the area of the Small Carpathians and Bratislava as well as the area of present day Austria, Hungary and Moravia.

The museum is housed in a modern building in the village of Devínska Nová Ves, which was originally settled by Croatian colonists. Exhibition objects originate particularly from Devínska Nová Ves, Šenkvice and the villages of Jarovce and Čunovo.
