„On Friday and Holiday“ (Folk costumes in Turiec Region)
from 31. 1. 2020 to 31. 10. 2020
Turiec is one of the regions that suffered unjustly from the lack of interest of researchers in folk clothing. This was due to the moderate appearance and less decorative character of clothing compared to other parts of Slovakia, as well as the fact that few written and pictorial documents from previous periods were preserved. The diversity and beauty of traditional clothing as well as the skill of our ancestors has been documented for more than a century by the Slovak National Museum in Martin.
From folk clothing nearly 40,000 items from 1,300 locations in Slovakia are located in the depositories. More than 1,200 of them come from Turiec towns and villages.
The exhibition „On Friday and holiday" presents garment worn in Turiec for more than two hundred years – from the first half of the 18th century to the 80s of the 20th century.
It also points to the transition from rural to urban type of women's, men's and children's clothing. In addition to clothing sets installed according to different situations, the exhibition offers a look at more than 700 pieces of clothing broken down by component.
Visitors have the opportunity to know the diversity of women's upper clothes as well as underwear. Shirts with variegated embroidery, especially in the front and around the neck typical of the Turiec region, together with trousers represent the men´s clothing.
The second part of the exhibition space is devoted to the clothing of mostly industrial production, which was worn by women in Turiec from the 20s to 80s of last century.
