The Double Cross

This exhibition tells the fascinating story of Slovakia’s national symbol—the double cross. It is a well-known emblem that gains special attention during important state anniversaries and holidays. While deeply rooted in tradition and emotion, the double cross has also been the subject of detailed historical research. For centuries, it has appeared in various forms and contexts, shaping Slovak identity.

The exhibition aims to highlight both familiar and lesser-known aspects of this symbol’s history, some of which may surprise visitors. It explores how the double cross has been used in different areas—spiritual and religious traditions, state and political symbols, local emblems, military and sports insignia, advertising, and even extremist movements. At the same time, it presents the symbol as it was seen in different historical periods.

The exhibition is divided into three main sections, tracing the journey of the double cross from the Middle Ages to the present day. Carefully selected artifacts place the symbol in various historical contexts. Most of the exhibits come from the Slovak National Museum’s collection, while others have been loaned from museums, galleries, archives, and private collections across Slovakia. Many of these items are on public display for the first time.

Visitors will see a variety of objects, including medieval tiles, gingerbread molds, glassware, traditional blue-dyed fabrics, modern artworks, sports jerseys, advertising materials, and even extremist publications.

This is the first exhibition in Slovakia to explore the double cross in such a broad and detailed way, revealing its many forms and meanings throughout history.
