Collections

The Červený Kameň Museum administers the following collections:

The collection of furniture features various types of tables, chairs, sofas, beds, showcases, chests of drawers, writing desks, mirrors, clocks and entire collections of bedrooms, parlours and other interior accessories made of wood from the 16th to the 20th century. The Art Nouveau bedroom and dining room sets and the collection of Italian Renaissance furniture are especially noteworthy.  

The collection of porcelain, glass and ceramics consists of over 4,500 items and features dining sets, glasses, vases, lamps, Spanish majolica, Turkish ceramics, Meissen porcelain, Holíč faience and others. 

The collection of paintings features portraits including the aristocratic galleries of members of the Pálffy, Forgách, Zichy, Svätojánsky, Esterházi, and Migazzi families, the set of portraits of the members from Rudolph Pálffy’s Hussar regiment and the collection of paintings of Peter Pálffy featuring landscapes, still lifes, historical, sacral and mythological scenes and others.  

The collection of prints includes series featuring the genre scenes, vedutas, sketches and aquarelles of Count Peter Pálffy. 

The collection of sculptures features sacral sculptures as well as busts of monarchs and other figures.

The collection of arms features cold weapons, firearms and pole arms including oriental arms (Turkish sables and yataghans). 

The collection of textiles includes oriental carpets, embroidery and military uniforms, as well as utility textiles. The most important textiles of the collection are the two handmade tapestries from the late 16th and early 17th century. The tapestry entitled The Fortress Siege is originally from the manor house in Budmerice and the tapestry from the mythological cycle Phaeton is from the manor house in Stupava. 

The archives feature private photographs of the Pálffy family and members of other noble families.   

The collection of metal objects is comprised of chandeliers, lamps and candle holders, silverware, trays and other kitchen and dining utensils, boxes and vessels for everyday use.   

Other items include souvenirs, paperweights, fans, wooden gingerbread forms, curiosities and hunting trophies.   

The library comprising over 14,200 books includes items from the Pálffy family which lived at Červený Kameň Castle (2,580 books) and other noble families which until 1945 resided in manor houses throughout Slovakia, including the Pálffy family of Smolenice, the Zichy family of Voderady, the Oldenburg family of Brodzany, the Odescalchi family, the Chotek family of Dolná Krupá, the Esterházy family of Bernolákovo and the Steiger family of Hajná Nová Ves. Most of the books were published in the 19th century, but library also has books published in the 16th, 17th, 18th and 20th centuries. The entire library collection is being digitally processed.
