Heroes of the Resistance

The Slovak National Museum, in cooperation with the Military History Institute in Bratislava and the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica, is opening the exhibition Heroes of the Resistance on August 31, 2023, at the Slovak National Museum – Museum of History at Bratislava Castle.

Through more than 100 collection items, the exhibition highlights both the achievements and the tragedies of selected Slovak participants in the Czechoslovak foreign and domestic resistance during World War II. The exhibited originals come from the collections of the organizing institutions as well as private individuals.

Among the outstanding artifacts on display are items recently acquired or intended for acquisition by the Slovak National Museum. These include a portrait of Marína Paulínyová and the furnishings of the salon of Imrich Karvaš, who served as the governor of the Slovak National Bank. Karvaš played a crucial role as a supporter of the domestic resistance movement and the Slovak National Uprising.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to view personal belongings of Jozef Gabčík, the commander of Operation Anthropoid and a key participant in the assassination of SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, the acting Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia.

The exhibition pays tribute to the thousands of Slovaks, as well as individuals of various nationalities living in Slovakia, who fought against Nazi Germany and its allies during World War II. It honors the heroes of the resistance, including those who served in Czechoslovak military units abroad, in the insurgent 1st Czechoslovak Army in Slovakia, and in the domestic partisan movement. Additionally, it recognizes those who joined the armed forces of other Allied nations or took part in resistance efforts in occupied territories.
