Contacts with Folk Culture: Region – Land – Country

The folk culture of our ancestors through the eyes of young artists is the main motif of the project entitled Touches with Folk Culture. We would like to invite you to the opening of the project’s fifth year which will take place at the Ethnographic Museum in Martin on Thursday, October 12, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. The opening will also feature a fashion show.

This event marks the fifth cooperative project carried out by the Slovak National Museum in Martin and the schools of applied arts in Ružomberok and Trenčín. This year, students worked with the theme Region-Land-Country, and in accordance with their study focus, they viewed the assignment from the perspective of a young, creative, and perceptive persons. The connection of current trends and technology with Slovak folk culture represents a kind of bridge to our traditions, country and history.

The Contact with Folk Culture project was launched in 2007 when the Slovak National Museum in Martin approached the School of Applied Arts in Trenčín and the School of Applied Arts in Ružomberok after previous successful collaborations. At that time, the students could become more familiar with the collection objects in the museum and transform their inspiration from a detail or a motif into textile creations, graphics or animation. The first year of the project, which took place in 2009, was based on the theme of folk clothing, for the second year in 2012, the museum showed students its collection of folk toys from its depositories. In 2015, the theme was symbol and ornamentation, and four years ago the main motif was fiber.

You can see what young artists imagine when they hear the words region, land and country until April 30, 2024 at the Slovak National Museum in Martin - Ethnographic Museum on Malá hora 2.
