Museum of the Slovak Ceramic Sculpture
The Museum of Slovak Ceramic Sculpture in Modra provides a permanent space for presenting the unique craft tradition of Slovakia. It is located in a picturesque, secluded area near the 17th-century city wall, and it is connected to the northern bastion, which houses the Ignác Bizmayer Gallery. The museum was built with EU funding as part of the Slovak-Austrian TRA-KER project. The inaugural exhibition was titled Ceramic Heritage – West Slovak Faience from the Austrian Ethnological Museum, and the project’s outcome was the exhibition With Sensitivity in the Hands – Contemporary Potters in Burgenland and the Bratislava Region, which ran until December 31, 2013.
The permanent exhibition, "From the History of Modra Ceramics," was opened on May 20, 2017. It captures the traditional urban craft from the period of the first written records, focusing on ceramic traditions, the life in the potter’s guild, and the products made by potters and jug-makers. In addition to pottery and jug-making, the exhibition also showcases a rich collection of figurative works, which are presented separately.
