The History and Culture of Carpathian Germans
The exhibition presents the history and culture of the Germans living in Handlová. Many colorful and black-and-white images, as well as reproductions of colored postcards, capture the changes over its more than 640-year rich history. The exhibition spaces are divided into two sections. Visitors will first become familiar with the history of the Carpathian Germans in Handlová through archaeological artifacts, and on a map of houses and courtyards, they will learn about the characteristic division of the village in the 1920s into an agricultural and craft Handlová in the center, and a mining Handlová, whose industrial history began in 1909. In the second part, they will see technical and architectural gems, such as the Church of St. Catherine, today’s city landmark, brown coal mining, supported by mining tools. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see the Handlová German women's folk costume, which is worn by the Grünwald choir. The small Handlová museum exhibition is supplemented with texts in both Slovak and German.
