Synagogue in Prešov
The synagogue in Prešov is part of a complex of Jewish communal institutions. The Orthodox synagogue, built in 1898 by the construction company Kollacsek and Wirth, is a two-story building without towers. Its relatively austere neo-Romanesque-Moorish façades hide a true treasure of synagogue architecture. The richly decorated interiors, with their fully preserved furnishings, are among the most attractive Jewish monuments in Slovakia.
The building is still used as a place of worship. The women's gallery houses the so-called Barkány Collection of Judaica – an exhibition of the Museum of Jewish Culture. The synagogue is part of a valuable complex of Jewish communal institutions (prayer hall, cheder – Jewish school, rabbinical office, ritual slaughterhouse) that the Orthodox community began building in the 1880s in an area behind the city walls.
