The Clay Day – Magic of Clay benefits from a € 199,900 grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway through the EEA Grants. The project has been co-financed from the State Budget of the Slovak Republic in the amount of € 29,985.

The aim of the project is capacity development of cultural players and audience development.

The SNM – Ľudovít Štúr Museum in Modra was founded as a specialized literary museum in 1965. The main mission of the museum is to document and to represent the life and the work of Ľudovít Štúr. The second field of interest is the history of the town and the ceramic. Ceramic traditions are displayed in two autonomous exhibitions, one of them in Ignác Bizmayer Art Gallery, and the other one in the Museum of Slovak Ceramic Sculpture.

Project focus

The goal of the project Clay Day – the Magic of Clay is to strengthen bilateral cooperation and to eliminate the borders between Slovakia and Norway by means of artistic expression while taking in consideration gender equality and minorities.

About the project

In 2019, the Slovak National Museum – Ľudovít Štúr Museum in Modra applied for a non-refundable financial contribution from the Grant of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism in the program "Cultural Entrepreneurship, Cultural Heritage and Cultural Cooperation" with the consent of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic to support the project titled Clay Day – the Magic of Clay as an activity prepared in the cooperation with the Telemark Museum of Porcelain in Porsgrunn and the town of Modra,. The main theme is clay, from which Modra's pottery and Norwegian porcelain are made. The common goal is an experience exchange while learning about each other's "clay" traditions.

The cooperation will take the form of exchange exhibitions in Modra and Porsgrunn, which will be presenting the similarities and the differences in production and decoration of ceramics and porcelain.

In addition to the exchange exhibitions, the project will result in the redesigned interior of the Art Gallery of the national artist Ignác Bizmayer, where the past and the present of figural sculpture will be presented.

A new design manual for the historic center of Modra town with reference to the elements of ceramics will be created as well as a laser performance in a public building. A symposium of artists from Norway and Slovakia will be an interesting event organized by the Slovak Folk Majolica and Modra town. The project will culminate in the ceramic festival Feast of Clay – Ceramic Modra in autumn 2022, when Modra will experience the ceramic and Norwegian porcelain. The last output is the creation of ceramic elements in the city, when master potters are given space for street art.

The partnership between the SNM – Ľudovít Štúr Museum in Modra, the Telemark Museum of Porcelain in Porsgrunn and the town of Modra will bring a lot of experience and benefits for all the participating partners and the general public. Still, the biggest benefit of the project will be the permanent ceramic footprint left in Modra.

The EEA Grants represent a contribution of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway towards a green, competitive and inclusive Europe.

There are two overall objectives: reduction of economic and social disparities in Europe, and to strengthen bilateral relations between the donor countries and 15 EU countries in Central and Southern Europe and Baltics.

The three donor countries cooperate closely with the EU trough the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA). The donors have provided €3.3 billion through consecutive grant schemes between 1994 and 2014. For the period 2014-2021, the EEA Grants amount to €1.55 billion. The priorities for this period are:

The EEA Grants are jointly financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, whose contributions are based on their GDP.

Eligibility for the Grants mirror the criteria set for the EU Cohesion Fund aimed at member countries where the Gross National Income (GNI) per inhabitant is less than 90% of the EU average.

All projects are co-financed by the State Budget of the Slovak Republic in the amount of 15%.
